If you’re walking the Kumano Kodo with a film camera, you may be wondering where to buy 35mm film in Tanabe. Outside Japan’s major cities, camera shops are rare — and finding film in a small town, right before a multi-day hike, can feel uncertain.
Shoraku Photo Studio (しょうらく写真館) is a family-run studio in Tanabe, Wakayama, and we keep a small stock of 35mm film. You’ll find us on the main approach to Tokei Shrine, about a 5-minute walk from JR Kii-Tanabe Station — right where many Kumano Kodo hikers begin their journey.
Fujifilm 400 — 35mm / 36 exposures / ISO 400 color negative ¥2,500 (tax included)
Fujifilm 400 is a versatile color negative film. ISO 400 gives you enough flexibility for the shaded forest paths of the Kumano Kodo, overcast coastal skies, and brighter scenes around town — all on a single roll, with no need to swap film.
Stock Is Limited — Please Message Us First
We’re a photo studio, not a camera shop, so our film stock is small and can sell out. To avoid a wasted trip, please message us before you visit to check what’s in stock.
How to Contact Us
The easiest way to reach us is by WhatsApp. We can confirm availability and answer any questions in English.
We’re a small studio and still fairly new to WhatsApp, so replies may take a little time — especially during a photo session. Thanks for your patience; we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
Payment
We accept cash (Japanese yen), major credit cards, and PayPay. Tax-free purchases are not available.

About Shoraku Photo Studio
Shoraku Photo Studio has been in business since 1962 — over 60 years as a family-run studio in the heart of Tanabe. Most of our work is portrait and commemorative photography for local families: Shichi-Go-San, school ceremonies, coming-of-age portraits, and more.
We’re not a camera shop, but we’re always happy to help fellow film photographers passing through town. If you have a moment, feel free to stop by and say hello — even just to grab a roll of film.
We hope you enjoy your walk on the Kumano Kodo. Have a great trip! 🥾📷
