If you’re traveling to the Kumano Kodo with a film camera, you may be wondering where to buy 35mm film in Tanabe. Finding film can become more difficult once you leave Japan’s larger cities, so it can be helpful to pick up an extra roll before heading onto the trail.
Shoraku Photo Studio (しょうらく写真館) is a family-run photo studio in Tanabe, Wakayama, and we keep a small stock of 35mm film. We’re located on the approach to Tokei Shrine, about a 5-minute walk from JR Kii-Tanabe Station — a major gateway for travelers heading to the Kumano Kodo.
The Film We Stock
Fujifilm 400 — 35mm / 36 exposures / ISO 400 color negative ¥2,500 (tax included)
Fujifilm 400 is a versatile color negative film. Its ISO 400 speed works well in a range of conditions, from shaded forest paths on the Kumano Kodo to overcast coastal skies and brighter scenes around Tanabe — all on a single roll. It’s a practical choice for travelers carrying a film camera.
Stock Is Limited — Please Message Us First
We’re a photo studio, not a camera shop, so we only keep a small supply of film and it may sell out. Feel free to message us before your visit, and we’ll let you know what’s in stock.

Shoraku Photo Studio has been serving the Tanabe community since 1962. Most of our work is family portraits and milestone photography, such as Shichi-Go-San, school entrance and graduation, and coming-of-age ceremonies.
